BFPA carries out a series of industry-specific surveys designed to meet the needs of members of the BFPA and BFPDA. Different surveys cover: Hydraulic Equipment, Pneumatic Control Equipment and Distributors (BFPDA), although there are a few exceptions where some overlap occurs.
All the surveys are carried out under strict confidentiality rules, only BFPA/BFPDA members are invited to reply and each report is only circulated among the participants for that particular survey.
Oxford Economic Forecasting produces a 5-year forecast for the UK fluid power industry on behalf of the BFPA. The comprehensive forecast report is a valuable planning tool for members, and includes end user sector reviews and up-to-date summaries of Europe and other world economies.
BFPA / BFPDA members can obtain the latest report published in November 2007 through the BFPA.
BFPA is a member of Cetop, the European Trade Federation for national fluid power associations, and as such participates in a statistics exchange with other Cetop members. Cetop in turn exchanges data with other major world countries through an International Statistics Committee (ISC), and as a result BFPA and BFPDA members have access to European and other country fluid power market information.
The ISC estimated world demand for fluid power equipment to be in excess of 23 billion euros in 2004, demonstrating the significance of the fluid power market within the world engineering sector.
BFPA monitors the official trade statistics for fluid power products (through Intrastat and Extrastat - produced in the UK by HM Customs and Excise HMCE) and also the UK production statistics (through ProdCom - produced in the UK by the Office for National Statistics ONS).
Unfortunately, fluid power is not particularly well represented in the official statistics, and the few product codes that exist for hydraulic and pneumatic equipment are scattered across several chapters of the HM Customs and Excise Tariff and Trade Codes, and the UK Standard Industrial Classification.
CETOP has made a successful application to Eurostat under Operation 2007 to form a new Fluid Power heading within the NACE. From 2008, a new NACE class: 28.12 manufacture of Fluid Power Equipment will be created, as will a similar classification 2812 be created in the ISIC. To view the latest proposals, follow the link to http://www.europa.eu.int/comm/eurostat/ramon and click on Operation 2007.
The HMCE website www.uktradeinfo.co.uk gives information on trade codes and also allows particular commodity codes to be identified through the ICN Online Search facility which is part of this website. Most fluid power products are found within the Harmonised System (HS) headings: 8412, 8413 and 8481.
For information on ProdCom (UK production sales, including exports), the Office for National Statistics website a www.statistics.gov.uk gives free access to UK production statistics by product code. Most fluid power products are now contained within the following reports: PRA29122 Compressors and PRA29130 Taps and Valves (the last quarterly data was published for 2004).
BFPA surveys are published throughout the year following a planned timetable, with these reports being sent to participants only. Apart from the BFPA surveys, other market data (such as European and world fluid power market figures) are also made available to BFPA and BFPDA members.
BFPA publishes a statistics newsletter several times a year to inform members of the latest available fluid power statistics, and any other relevant fluid power statistical matters. Recent copies of the newsletter can be downloaded below as pdf files. The detailed statistics referred to in these newsletters are accessible to members only via the Members Only Section.
